Israel has formed a unity government, ending a longstanding political crisis. The power-sharing deal, which was drafted in April, was signed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Blue and White Party leader Benny Gantz. The agreement has Mr Netanyahu serving as prime minister for 18 months, followed by 18 months of Mr Gantz as prime minister. Mr Netanyahu will begin his fifth term as prime minister just one week before he goes on trial for corruption. The two leaders have said the government’s first priority is reconstructing Israel’s economy, which has been greatly impacted by the coronavirus. Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, Israel held three separate elections in under a year, but no government was formed. The new government will have 36 ministers and 16 deputy ministers. According to Mr Gantz, the group of ministers is “broadly representative and therefore more effective.” However, the represented parties differ on some of Israel’s most pressing issues, such as the proposed annexation of the West Bank and limitations on the independent judiciary.

From a Christian perspective, the forming of a unity government after months of political deadlock should be celebrated. Many Christians around the world continue to take the words of Psalm 122:6 to heart, and they pray for the peace of Jerusalem and Israel as a nation. To reach a peaceful resolution after three inconclusive elections is surely an answer to those prayers, especially if you consider that Mr Gantz had initially vowed never to join a government led by Mr Netanyahu. In these times, testimonies abound of how God has been working situations for the good through the coronavirus crisis, and in this situation, it also took the coronavirus pandemic to bring a change in Mr Gantz’s position, opting for a unity government in order to manage the crisis at hand. Daniel 2:21 tells us that God changes times and seasons and that He deposes kings and raises up others. In light of this, we trust that God has instituted a very unique government in Israel for a very unique time in history. Israel is a strategic role-player in the Middle East, and thus a more stable political situation will ultimately impact the larger region as well.

Pray with us for the following:

  • For continued unity between Mr Netanyahu and Mr Gantz
  • For the new government to lead Israel according to the will and the way of God
  • For the peace of the Lord to reign over Jerusalem and Israel
