11 MARCH ’20 | PRAY FOR OUR WORLD

Dear prayer partners,

On Sunday 8 March, Italy’s government announced that they will be locking down much of the country’s north, restricting the movement of about a quarter of the Italian population in region that serves as the country’s economic engine, in efforts to contain the COVID-19 coronavirus. Around the world major events – from the pope’s Sunday service to a Formula One car race in Bahrain to a sumo competition in Japan – have been cancelled or held behind closed doors in efforts to minimise mass gatherings to halt the spread of the virus.

The countries currently struggling with highest incidence of the virus include: China with over 80,000 cases; South Korea and Italy with over 7,000 cases; Iran with over 6,000 cases; and France and Germany with about 1,000 cases reported.

Saudi Arabia has imposed a temporary lockdown on its eastern Qatif region to halt the spread of coronavirus after recording four more cases that raised their total to 11. There has also been a rise in new cases among other countries in the Gulf region.

The number of confirmed cases in the US reached nearly 550 on Sunday (8 March), including 22 deaths, according to state public health authorities and a running national tally kept by the Johns Hopkins University centre tracking the outbreak.

South Africa has officially reported their seventh case of the coronavirus in the country, one of whom is the wife of the first man who was diagnosed. To date, the couple’s two children tested negative for the virus.

According to the Worldometer, there have been over 110,000 cases of the coronavirus worldwide, resulting in almost 4,000 deaths, while over 62,000 people have recovered.

Many countries are responding to the crisis, while countries in the midst of conflict remain vulnerable to an outbreak. Those most vulnerable to the virus include people over the age of 30 years, with the elderly and those with existing health conditions being at highest risk.

As the body of Christ, we need to be bearers of hope, willing to assist the vulnerable, loving and praying for those infected and having complete faith in a God who remains in control.

Please join with us in praying for our world, especially governments and medical professionals, as they seek to contain this virus.

“In times of crisis, the world needs steady people who are strengthened by God’s grace and selfless by God’s power.” (Todd Wagner)
