An email circulating on Christian networks reports that a “New World Order” will be announced on September 25th and introduced October 20th, ushering in a worldwide financial collapse.

One version of the email reads as follows:

“EMERGENCY BULLETIN! The New World Order Will Be Implemented September 25th! The New World Currency Will Be Introduced October 20th! We Are At the Brink of Total Worldwide Financial Collapse! TAKE ACTION NOW!

Pastor Lindsey Williams has asked me to compile an emergency bulletin for those on his email list. The information is so important he has said: ‘This is probably the most important bulletin we have ever sent – This is the fulfilment of everything the Elite have ever wanted to do – It will affect every human being, worldwide – They will implement this over a period of time – The dates have now been officially set for the start of implementation.’

The New World Order Will Be Implemented In September! The Roman Catholic Pope just announced when he speaks at the United Nations on the 25th September 2015 that he will issue an ENCYCLICAL – The definition of an encyclical is – A letter from the Pope sent to all Roman Catholic Bishops throughout the world.

Every Roman Catholic is EXPECTED to obey. There are 1.2 billion Roman Catholics around the world.  According to Pastor Williams this means that when the Pope announces the New World Order in front of the annual gathering of world leaders on September 25th, 2015 at the United Nations just before the signing and implementation of the ‘Post-2015 Development Agenda’ that the Pope will order every Roman Catholic around the world to obey unconditionally – total obedience – including the acceptance of the Mark of the Beast when it is announced.

In the newsletter Pastor Williams issued in June it speaks about the visit of Pope Francis to the USA and what Holy See (The Vatican) is involved with in the United Nations (Global Government) and sustainable development (Agenda 21). Pastor Williams elaborates in detail in his DVD what this means in his new DVD ‘Things You Must Do Before September 15th, 2015’.The New World Currency Will Be Introduced In October! On October 20th, 2015 the International Monetary Fund will announce a new world currency.”

The e-mail is false and a classic example of a conspiracy theory.

INcontext applies seven ‘hoax verification guidelines’ when evaluating news that may be untrue, so below are applications of some of these guidelines relative to this particular article:

This might sound like the obvious, but the topic of the end times is something close to our hearts, so we tend to believe everything or anything that involves major role players – like the Pope, Mr Obama, etc.  The problem is that we believe the story before weighing the facts.  If the message reveals extremely important information that nobody else is talking about in reputable media and Christian sources, be very suspicious (the key word here is reputable).  Why have we not heard anything from global Christian leaders like John Piper, John McArthur or even the Moderators of any major Evangelical denomination across the world?  Are they all ignorant and only pastor Williams informed?

A further most concerning and highly revealing issue is the fact that Pastor Williams, on the homepage of his website (http://www.lindseywilliams.net/), does not urge his followers to share the Gospel with a renewed urgency in these troubled times.  Nor does Pastor Williams explore the Biblical avenue of praying for your enemies by appealing to his followers to pray with compassion for the Pope and those supposedly involved in this conspiracy. Rather, Pastor Williams urges his followers to buy his DVDs, books and videos. He also encourages his followers to act in their own interest by buying as much gold as possible, to stock up on food and medicine, and (this alone should be a warning signal beyond any argument) to buy and store firearms and weapons (http://www.lindseywilliams.net/store-food-water-and-firearms/).

If this is the kind of leader who is to be imitated and believed, then Christianity offers no alternative to a violent world. This does not sound like to the Biblical call to “love, power and a sound mind’ (2 Timothy 1:7).

Common sense also tells us that many of the 1.2 billion Catholics in the world are educated people who will not easily submit to an institution with which they do not agree.

Another application of common sense is simply to look at the content of the email: if the aim of the email seems to be more about persuading than informing the reader, be suspicious. Originators of hoaxes are more interested in pushing people’s emotional buttons than communicating accurate information.

The problem with all conspiracy theories is that they are accepted without critical analysis. If the story doesn’t register on mainstream media or on any ‘hoax-correcting’ pages, take a close look at the webpages on which the story is appearing.

This content of the email  appears on pages like The BlackPlanet.com (http://www.blackplanet.com/news/article_comments.html?news_item_id=26597410) but once again with Pastor Williams as reference. As Christians, we should be selective regarding the sources with which we want to be associated, and in all honesty, these pages do not promote Biblical values – they stir suspicion and fear and, ultimately, hatred.

Look for the oldest postings of the story that you can find, and ask some questions: Who was the first person reporting this incident?  Where did Pastor Williams get his news from, and why is he the only one reporting on this?

On this basis, the email message fits the profile for ‘conspiracy theory’.

The good news is that we should know in September if Pastor Williams can be trusted with any future theories.  Time will tell.
